Richard Sampson

Date of Ordination: February 13, 1999
Current Assignment: Padre Pio Parish, Vineland

In my teens I stopped going to church because I felt it was a waste of time. When I was around 30 years old, I almost lost my wife and daughter in childbirth. This gave me the wakeup call I needed to realize that I was not the center of the universe and I decided to return to church and to God. Once I returned, the experience was very positive and I gradually became a lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and spent a lot of time at the parish.

At one point, I mentioned to a friend that I was considering the Diaconate to which she responded, “well, it’s about time”. This gave me the affirmation to enter the inquiry stage. I entered the program on a year-to-year basis with the provision that if at any time this did feel right I would back out. Six and a half years later it still felt like this is what I was being called to do. I was ordained on February 13, 199 with 11 other men. It has now been 18 years and it still feels right.
