I was a Corporal in Philadelphia Police Department then transferred to the District Attorney’s Office, Special Investigations Unit as a Detective. Because of traffic conditions travelling downtown via I-95, I started going to daily mass at St. John the Evangelist Church at 13th near Market St. During those years of daily mass and frequent confessions, I had a woman, by the name of Pauline Shepherd say; “Murphy, you ought to become a deacon!”
That thought stuck in my mind for years and kept growing. When I retired from Detective work and moved to Ocean City, NJ, I happened upon the Camden Diocese website and there was a flashing info announcement, saying; “Deacon information night, Absecon”, and it was for that evening. I had nothing else to do, so I drove to Absecon. The rest is history.
Everything that ever happened to all my grace, all my sins, and me both good and bad prepared me to be a deacon in Sea Isle City. What a Blessing!
